"Prescribe Using" Permissions (also known as "Prescribing For") – Veterinary Settings

The following permissions control what another user can do using your name and veterinary credentials (DVM/VMD license and DEA, if applicable). In many veterinary practices, veterinary technicians, assistants, or support staff help veterinarians prepare prescriptions. In VetWay, the "Prescribe Using" settings allow you to grant or restrict these permissions to support that workflow safely and appropriately.

Granting Access to Support Staff

Before a technician, assistant, or other staff member can help prepare or process prescriptions on your behalf, you must first grant them permission to “Prescribe Using” your credentials. Once permission is granted, you can further define what actions those users are allowed to perform. These settings ensure that you, as the prescribing veterinarian, maintain control over who can use your name and license and what actions they can take.

Permission Settings

Users can e-send NON-CONTROLLED prescriptions without veterinarian approval

  • When enabled:
All users with “Prescribe Using” access can prepare AND send non-controlled prescriptions directly to the pharmacy under your credentials.
  • When disabled:
Users can only prepare prescriptions and queue them for your review. You must review and complete the final send.

Users can Approve RefillRx Messages from Pharmacies

  • When enabled:
Authorized users can approve and send responses to electronic refill requests from pharmacies on your behalf.
  • When disabled:
Only you can review and approve or deny all refill requests.

Users can Deny RefillRx Messages from Pharmacies

  • When enabled:
Authorized users can deny and send responses to pharmacy refill requests.
  • When disabled:
Only you can deny refill requests after review.

Users cannot send CONTROLLED prescriptions

  • By law, only a licensed veterinarian with proper EPCS authorization may approve and electronically send controlled substances.
  • Support staff may prepare controlled prescriptions for your review, but you must complete the final approval and transmission.
  • This restriction is required and cannot be changed.

Summary

These settings allow veterinarians to:

  • Delegate prescription preparation to trusted staff
  • Maintain compliance with veterinary and DEA regulations
  • Control final authorization of prescriptions, especially controlled substances
